Developing Fluency

Developing Fluency

How can we develop fluency in our young readers in authentic ways?  Consider some of these ideas:
  • Readers' Theater
  • Choral Reading of Poetry
  • Modeling Fluent Reading in Daily READ ALOUDS
  • Reading familiar books in a fluency box
  • Oral reading opportunities in a Guided Reading group
  • Teacher Feedback.  Set high expectations.  If a child is reading one word at a time, stop them, and tell them that is not how reading sounds.  Model reading a few words at a time.

Remember, fluency is not speed reading.  A fluent reader has an appropriate pace, and reads in meaningful chunks, with intonation, inflection and pitch that reflects his/her understanding of the story.  It requires practice, practice and more practice.
