a) One ample lap easily accessible to a small child.

b) Proximity to a bookstore with a decent children's department.

c) A library card (preferably in the child's name).

d) An understanding that a love of books and reading is one of the greatest, grandest, and most valuable gifts you can bestow upon a child.
